Happy Mercury retrograde.
Mercury retrograde gets a bad rap, but that’s only because it is the planet in our solar system that stations retrograde most often. All the planets station retrograde, but since Mercury orbits around the sun in just 88 Earth days, it retrogrades about 3 times per year.
Mercury is known in mythology as the messenger of the gods, so it’s no mystery that Mercury retrograde has a tendency to cause mayhem when it appears to “move backwards” in the sky. Its typical management of communication, intellect and travel are out of funk during retrograde, so it may feel like we are backward on all three topics. Miscommunications and disagreements arise, conversations go awry, travel gets delayed, and thoughts might feel a little scrambled.
Retrogrades are a time of second chances and revisiting lessons, projects or issues to assure we weren’t glossing over the surface the first time. A few key themes of retrograde are:
- rest
- reflect
- resolve
- reconnect
- review
- revise
- return
- research
- reorganize
- rethink
- repair
- revisit
- resolve
- repeat
When you think (re)trograde, think of any action that requires you to do it again. This retrograde is in the sign of Cancer (June 18 to July 12), which represents emotions, love, and family. Expect to revisit tough relationships and challenging conversations with loved ones or reopen severed lines with someone from the past. Along with a few challenging transits along the way, Mercury retrograde will encourage us to continue using our words and minds to fight for those we love. Unresolved childhood traumas or buried family issues may also resurface over the next few weeks, so take this time to revisit the situation in a way that brings you more peace. Some dread Mercury retrograde because it makes us revisit challenging chapters of our lives, but once you discover its learning lesson you will be able to handle it in a more empowered way the second time around.
